REALTOR® Code Of Ethics

The REALTOR® Code of Ethics sets REALTORS® apart from other real estate practitioners. These ethical requirements are a key factor separating REALTORS® from all other real estate practitioners because they hold the REALTOR® to a higher level of professionalism in the real estate industry. When a licensee joins the St. Louis Association of REALTORS®, they agree to subscribe to the REALTOR® strict Code of Ethics.

Some of the basic principles of the Code of Ethics are as follows:

  • REALTORS® shall strive to protect and promote their client interests, while being honest with all parties.
  • REALTORS® shall avoid exaggeration, misrepresentation, and the concealment of pertinent facts.
  • REALTORS® shall not reveal facts that are confidential under the scope of the REALTOR'S® agency relationship.
  • REALTORS® shall disclose any present or contemplated interest in any property to all parties.
  • REALTORS® shall avoid side deals unless the REALTOR® has their clients informed consent.
  • REALTORS® shall accept compensation from only one party, except with full disclosure and informed consent.
  • REALTORS® shall keep the funds of clients and customers in escrow.
  • REALTORS® shall assure, whenever possible, that transactional details are in writing.
  • REALTORS® shall provide equal service to all clients and customers.
  • REALTORS® shall be knowledgeable and competent in the fields of practice in which they ordinarily engage. REALTORS® shall obtain assistance or disclose lack of experience if necessary.
  • REALTORS® shall not engage in the unauthorized practice of law.

The Preamble section of the REALTOR® Code of Ethics says it best when it states the following: "The term REALTOR® has come to connote competency, fairness, and high integrity resulting from adherence to a lofty ideal of moral conduct in business relations. No inducement of profit and no instruction from clients ever can justify departure from this ideal."

The REALTOR Code of Ethics protects both the public and the REALTOR®.
