What is a REALTOR®?
The term REALTOR® is one of the most recognized tradenames. However, many people do not know what it means. Some people, mistakenly believe the terms refers to all real estate licensees. But that would be wrong... very wrong.
In the simplest terms, real estate licensees can only call themsleves REALTORS® if they have become members of the National Association of REALTORS® All members of the St. Louis Association of REALTORS® are automatically members of the National Association of REALTORS®. Membership in the St. Louis Association of REALTORS® entitles our real estate professionals to use NAR's federally registered collective membership trade name, REALTOR®.
Being a REALTOR® is more than just becoming a member of an association. REALTORS® are real estate licensees that have chosen to hold themselves to a higher standard of conduct than the minimum set by state license law. Only REALTORS® are required to the follow the REALTOR® Code of Ethics which establishes a higher level of professionalism and provides the public protection.
The Preamble section of the REALTOR® Code of Ethics says it best when it states the following: "The term REALTOR® has come to connote competency, fairness, and high integrity resulting from adherence to a lofty ideal of moral conduct in business relations. No inducement of profit and no instruction from clients ever can justify departure from this ideal."
Not every real estate licensee in St. Louis can call themselves a REALTOR®. Make sure you choose a real estate professional who is a REALTOR®. Find a REALTOR
