The Gate District is a neighborhood within the central eastern portion of the City of St. Louis and currently holds, as of the 2010 census, 3,456 residents. Bordered by the neighborhoods of Botanical Heights, Compton Heights, Midtown and Lafayette Square, Gate District covers roughly 0.65 total square miles of land. It is represented by two Aldermen sitting in the sixth and 19th Wards respectively.
Originally known by the names of both “Lafayette Town” and “New Town in Town”, the area encompassing Gate District has currently gone through quite a revival and restructuring since the late-1970s after a rough prior decade. The area began development when similar nearby neighborhoods like Botanical Heights and Lafayette Square were coming into their own.
One of the amenities of the current-Gate District region that has been a staple for over 80 years included the neighborhood’s only florist market, St. Louis Floral Market – which is often known by locals as “The Market” or “Florist Row.” Providing residents with a hodgepodge of flower selection, its home to the local Walter Knoll Florist company whose main office can be found on LaSalle Street.
