Located in the northern portion of St. Louis County near a city that bears a similar name is the village of Velda Village Hills. The village is nestled between the cities of Velda City, Hillsdale and Pine Lawn. As of the 2010 census, the population for Velda Village Hills was recorded at 1,052 residents. The village has a total area of no more than 0.12 square miles of land.
The village was incorporated in 1945 and was often confused in error to the neighboring city of Velda City … which was known as Velda Village until 1990. Unfortunately, not much is known about the history of Velda Village Hills and why there was such a distinction to give the particular region the names of “Velda.”
In a 1990 article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, then Mayor of Velda City Lottie Mar Williams believed she had heard that the “land on which the two communities sat on was once owned by two brothers, one of whom had a daughter named Velda.”
Residents of Velda Village Hills are served by the Normandy School District.
