The History of St. Louis REALTORS®

It’s hard to believe that what is now a proud organization of more than 7,000 members began more than 140 years ago with just 25. In 1877, the St. Louis Real Estate Exchange was founded with a mission to “advance the interests of the City of St. Louis and its people by promoting public improvements and to maintain a structure for the sale, purchase, renting, and leasing of real estate.”

As the 20th century began, the St. Louis Real Estate Exchange emerged as a driving force in promoting homeownership and the American dream. Its leadership and influence would eventually help shape the real estate industry at both the state and national levels.

During the 1904 World’s Fair, nearly 100 real estate delegates from across the country gathered in St. Louis and organized together, leading to the creation of the National Association of Real Estate Exchanges in 1908, now known as the National Association of REALTORS®. Three presidents of the St. Louis Real Estate Exchange—Clarence Turley, Cyrus Crane Willmore, and Daniel Sheehan—later went on to serve as presidents of NAR. St. Louis leaders also played a major role in the development of the Missouri REALTORS® in 1936.

As both the St. Louis Real Estate Exchange and NAR continued to grow, their leaders recognized the importance of providing public real estate education and serving as a unified voice on issues affecting property owners, communities, and the industry. The Association championed leadership development, advocated for the expansion of homeownership opportunities, and worked alongside business and government leaders to strengthen resources for buyers and property owners nationwide.

Today, St. Louis REALTORS®, formerly known as the St. Louis Association of REALTORS®, remains one of the largest real estate associations in the United States and one of the oldest still in existence. The Association continues to uphold the vision of its founders by promoting professionalism, advocacy, education, and unity within the real estate industry. More than a century later, that original mission still helps lay the foundation for homeownership opportunities throughout the St. Louis region.
